About the event
The Weeks of the German Language open with Claudia Müller's documentary on Elfriede Jelinek, screened by the Austrian Embassy to mark the writer's 80th birthday. In 2004 Jelinek became the first German-speaking woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, and the film keeps its eye firmly on what she does with words. It is a layered, associative portrait, full of contradictions, that comes at her linguistic montage from very close quarters. Afterwards the film scholar Dr Olga Kourelou and the theatre director and classical reception scholar Dr Magdalena Zira lead a discussion. The evening runs from 7.30pm to 10pm, and admission is free.
