About the event
The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra marks twenty years of its foundation with an evening of Barber and Tchaikovsky, joined by the violinist Diana Tishchenko, first Grand Prix winner at the Long-Thibaud-Crespin Competition in Paris and a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Barber's Adagio for Strings, often counted among the saddest and most moving pieces ever written, opens the programme. His Violin Concerto follows, its warm and tender opening movements giving way to a finale of breathless virtuosity. Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony, held together by its recurring fate motif, then travels from darkness into a triumphant blaze of light. The orchestra's Artistic Director, Myron Michailidis, conducts; the concert begins at 8.30pm, with tickets from €17 to €25 and concessions from €12 to €18 for students, pensioners and large families.
