About the event
As part of the Weeks of the German Language, the Goethe-Institut screens Natja Brunckhorst's comedy Two to One (2024) for free, a film inspired by a true story from German reunification. During the 1990 currency union, hundreds of millions of East German marks, nearly 400 tonnes of banknotes, were secretly stored underground in Halberstadt, and to this day nobody knows quite how much went missing. That summer, lifelong friends Maren (Sandra Hüller), Robert (Max Riemelt) and Volker (Ronald Zehrfeld) stumble on the hoard and, with their neighbours, hatch a clever plan to swap the worthless notes for real goods. The result is a warm, witty and surprisingly moving tale of love, friendship, money, fairness and a summer when anything seemed possible. It runs for 116 minutes in German with English subtitles, starting at 20:30.
