Its first artistic director, Nikolaos Mantzaros, set the Hymn to Liberty to music, and that tune became the national anthem of both Greece and Cyprus, which gives a concert on the national holiday a rather special ring. The programme travels from west to east, from Ionian music through Hadjidakis and Theodorakis to a tribute to Cyprus's own tradition. Soprano Elena Kelesidou, who has sung at Covent Garden and the Met, is joined by Giorgos Davlas and the young Cypriot tenor Ioannis Livanos, with Spyros Prosoparis conducting.
